South Korean author Han Kang wins the Nobel Prize in Literature

South Korean author Han Kang has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature for her “poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.”

Born in 1970 in Gwangju, South Korea, Han Kang moved to Seoul at the age of nine. Coming from a literary background, with her father being a renowned novelist, she began her literary career with poetry in 1993 before transitioning to fiction in 1995 with her debut short story collection “Love of Yeosu.”

Her most internationally acclaimed novel, “The Vegetarian” (2007), brought her global recognition. It tells the story of a protagonist who rejects traditional dietary practices, leading to violent consequences.

Throughout her works, Han Kang explores physical and mental suffering, delving deeply into the fragility of life.
