Pakistan’s cinematic landscape has achieved a significant milestone with The Glassworker, the country’s first hand-drawn animated film, earning a spot in the eligibility list for the 97th Academy Awards (Oscars 2025). Produced in collaboration with Geo Films, this groundbreaking feature represents Pakistan in the Best International Feature Film category.

Recently, the Academy Awards revealed its list of eligible films for various categories, and The Glassworker has qualified for not just one but two categories: Best International Feature Film and Best Animated Feature Film. Competing in the Animated Feature Film category, the movie faces tough competition from 30 international films. Meanwhile, in the International Feature Film category, it will contend with 86 films globally, including India’s Laapataa Ladies.

Directed by Usman Riaz, The Glassworker draws inspiration from the legendary Ghibli Studio and tells a compelling story. It follows Vincent, a young glassblower, and his father, Thomas, who run the finest glass workshop in the country. Their lives take an unexpected turn when war disrupts their peaceful existence. The arrival of a military colonel and his talented violinist daughter, Elise, further challenges the father-son relationship, leading to emotional and moral trials.

Released on July 26, 2023, in cinemas, The Glassworker has already garnered widespread acclaim both locally and internationally. Its unique narrative, breathtaking hand-drawn animation, and emotional depth have set new benchmarks for Pakistani cinema.
