Although IG Metall, Germany’s leading automotive workers’ union, has criticized Tesla’s working conditions at Gruenheide, Tesla implemented the wage increase without union involvement. Human Resources Director Erik Demmler emphasized the importance of the raise, stating, “This is particularly welcome news for our workforce, especially at a time when many German carmakers are discussing job cuts.”
Gruenheide Workforce and Cost-Reduction Efforts
Tesla’s Gruenheide gigafactory is its only production facility in Europe and currently employs around 12,000 people. Earlier this year, Tesla reduced staffing at the site, part of broader efforts to control costs. Voluntary staff reductions were offered, and contracts for some subcontractors were not renewed.
