Pakistan’s Sugar Exports to Bangladesh & Beyond: $500M Revenue Expected
Pakistan is set to strengthen its position in the global sugar market with significant exports, including a shipment of 25,000 tons of high-quality sugar to Bangladesh. The shipment is scheduled to depart from Karachi Port next month, marking a milestone in Pakistan-Bangladesh trade relations.
According to industry officials, this large-scale export is a noteworthy event, as Bangladesh has traditionally sourced sugar from India. In 2023, the Pakistani sugar industry secured deals totaling approximately 600,000 tons, approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Among these, 70,000 tons are earmarked for Central Asian states, while Thailand has already purchased 50,000 tons. Gulf, Arab, and African countries have also signed agreements, further diversifying Pakistan’s export destinations.
With sugar prices in the international market reaching $530 per ton as of December 2, Pakistan anticipates earning between $400-500 million from exports. This impressive achievement is expected to contribute significantly to the country’s foreign exchange reserves.
Majid Malik, a representative of the Pakistan sugar industry, highlighted the sector’s growing role as a foreign exchange earner. The government has granted approval for continued sugar exports following the new crushing season next year.
This development signals the resurgence of Pakistan’s sugar industry as a global player, leveraging favorable international market conditions and strategic government policies.
