A Major Step for Defence Capability
Australian missile manufacturing has taken a significant leap forward. Lockheed Martin Australia launched a brand-new facility. This key site is located in Port Wakefield, South Australia. The factory will produce Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) missiles. These are vital for the Australia Defence Forces (ADF). The facility will also supply crucial allied nations. This includes the United States.
Deepening AUKUS Partnership and Security
Minister for Defence Industry, Pat Conroy, spoke at the opening. He highlighted the deeper ties with AUKUS allies. The facility extends Australia’s sovereign capability. It reinforces the defence partnership with the United States. Furthermore, it strengthens collaboration on guided weapons. The facility equips the ADF with long-range strike capability. This is essential for keeping Australians safe.
The Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) Scheme
Domestic GMLRS missile production is part of a larger plan. It fits into the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS). This initiative is fully funded by the GWEO scheme. The completion of this state-of-the-art facility is a key milestone. Paula Hartley, VP of Tactical Missiles, Lockheed Martin, commented on this. She stated it strengthens sovereign capability. It also ensures full compatibility with U.S. inventories. This is a massive boost for Australian missile manufacturing.
Lockheed Martin’s First Facility Outside the US
Intract Australia finished the facility’s fit-out quickly. It took just over six months. This location is now Lockheed Martin’s second GMLRS site globally. The first is in Camden, Arkansas. Australian staff received training there before the launch. This marks a first for the company. They have never produced these missiles outside of the US before. This is a huge benefit for defence readiness. It also benefits Australian missile manufacturing and industry.
Building Long-Term Industrial Strength
Defence Minister Richard Marles emphasized the importance. He said starting missile production this year is a major step. It is crucial for building the nation’s industrial strength. The goal is creating advanced Australian missile manufacturing capability. This capability will serve Australia for decades to come. The facility ensures long-term national security.
