CDA Plans Transition to Electric Buses for Sustainable Public Transport

On Tuesday, the Chairman of the Capital Development Authority (CDA), Muhammad Ali Randhawa, outlined significant plans to transition commercial buses to electric alternatives.

In a meeting, Randhawa emphasized the importance of this shift, describing it as a crucial step toward enhancing the sustainability and efficiency of Islamabad’s public transportation system. Transitioning from conventional to electric buses is expected to modernize the city’s transport network while significantly reducing its carbon footprint.

Funding Support for Electric Vehicles

To facilitate the transition to electric buses, Randhawa tasked his team with exploring the potential for offering soft loans to commercial transport operators. He also called for the implementation of special incentives to accelerate the switch.

To secure funding for this initiative, he highlighted the need to seek assistance from International Financial Institutions (IFIs), focusing on obtaining carbon credits and ensuring a positive environmental impact.

To ensure alignment with the country’s broader climate goals, the Ministry of Climate Change will also play a role in the program.

Infrastructure Improvements

During the meeting, it was noted that enhancing the charging infrastructure is vital for the project’s success. The CDA plans to collaborate with various institutions and organizations in Islamabad, including schools, colleges, and universities, to facilitate the transition of all buses to electric.

Charging Stations at Fuel Pumps

Randhawa instructed the introduction of new regulations to simplify the establishment of charging stations for electric vehicles at petrol stations throughout the city. Additionally, charging stations will be set up near the digital parking lots recently launched by the CDA.
