SANAA: Yemen’s Houthi has confirmed that its self-proclaimed Prime Minister Ahmed Ghaleb Nasser al-Rahawi was killed in an Israeli air strike earlier this week.
According to the group, the strike targeted a gathering of senior Houthi officials in Sanaa, the Yemeni capital, on Thursday. Several ministers were killed alongside Rahawi, while others sustained serious and moderate injuries, the Houthis’ presidential office confirmed.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Rahawi and several top Houthi leaders were “eliminated” within hours of receiving intelligence about the gathering.
Saudi news outlet al-Hadath reported that the Houthis’ foreign minister, justice minister, youth and sports minister, and social affairs and labour minister were among those killed.
The Houthis announced that Muhammad Ahmed Miftah, the deputy prime minister, would assume Rahawi’s role.
Rahawi, who became prime minister in August 2024, was widely seen as a symbolic figure rather than a key military strategist. The Houthis remain led by Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, while the movement’s defence minister and chief of staff were not among those killed.
The IDF is still assessing the full impact of the operation.
Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, the Houthis have stepped up missile attacks on Israel and targeted commercial ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, claiming solidarity with the Palestinians. In response, Israel has carried out multiple air strikes on Houthi-held areas in Yemen to limit further attacks.
This strike marks one of the most significant Israeli operations against the Houthis, targeting their political leadership amid escalating regional tensions.
