New Internet Cable in Pakistan Dramatically Boosts Connectivity

Pakistan has taken a major step forward in strengthening its digital infrastructure with the arrival of a new internet cable in Pakistan, part of the advanced SEA-ME-WE 6 submarine cable system. This next-generation fibre-optic network spans 19,200 km and links Pakistan with countries between Singapore and France.

According to the Ministry of IT & Telecom, the system delivers a total capacity of over 100 terabits per second. It also provides one of the lowest-latency internet routes between Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Western Europe. This upgrade is set to significantly enhance Pakistan’s global connectivity.

SEA-ME-WE 6 Brings Massive Capacity and Reliability

Pakistan has received an allocation of 13.2 Tbps from the cable, with 4 Tbps activated immediately. This expansion boosts international bandwidth and improves support for cloud platforms, data centres, fintech, streaming services, e-commerce, and the nation’s growing digital economy.

The SEA-ME-WE 6 system includes more fibre pairs and double the capacity of previous SEA-ME-WE networks. With geo-diversified crossings and multiple landing points, it strengthens resilience across busy Asia-Europe routes. The system also offers better fault protection, rapid scalability, and reduced operational costs for service providers.

Pakistan’s Expanding Submarine Cable Network

The SEA-ME-WE 6 project is supported by a consortium of key telecom companies, including Transworld Associates, Singtel, Orange, Bharti Airtel, Telecom Egypt, Telekom Malaysia, and others.

Recent cable developments in Pakistan include:

  • Africa-1 cable landed by PTCL in February
  • Africa-2 cable connected by Transworld Associates in December

Currently, Pakistan receives international internet access through six operational submarine cables:

  • AAE-1
  • SMW-4
  • IMEWE
  • SMW-5
  • TWA-1
  • PEACE cable (operated by Cyber Internet Services)

With the addition of SEA-ME-WE 6, Pakistan’s overall network capacity and redundancy have improved significantly, reducing the risk of outages and enhancing the quality of service nationwide.

Conclusion: A Strong Future for Pakistan’s Digital Landscape

The arrival of the new internet cable in Pakistan marks a major milestone in the country’s digital transformation. With higher bandwidth, lower latency, and improved reliability, the SEA-ME-WE 6 system will support innovation, business growth, and better online experiences for millions of users.
