Preventing electricity theft and overbilling has become a top priority for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has taken decisive steps to address these critical issues. In a recent meeting addressing the performance of electricity distribution companies, the Prime Minister stressed the urgent need for action to prevent electricity theft and ensure transparency in billing.
Focus on Smart Meter Implementation
The Prime Minister directed companies such as Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO), Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO), and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) to expedite the installation of smart meters. He emphasized that these measures are critical to bringing transparency to the billing system and eradicating overbilling practices.
Overbilling Will Not Be Tolerated
PM Shehbaz underscored that overbilling is unacceptable under any circumstances. He instructed authorities to take strict action against officials found involved in such malpractices. This step aims to restore public trust and streamline billing operations.
Tackling Electricity Theft
The Prime Minister called for robust measures to curb electricity theft. He urged distribution companies to adopt innovative approaches and leverage technology to address this persistent issue effectively.
Swift Recruitment and Transparent Hiring
Expressing concern over delays in appointing Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) for electricity distribution companies, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of a transparent recruitment process. He directed the authorities to complete these appointments promptly while ensuring merit-based hiring for workforce positions.
Commitment to NEPRA Targets
PM Shehbaz instructed distribution companies to utilize all available resources to meet targets set by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). Achieving these goals will contribute to improving the overall efficiency of the power sector.
