Samsung has just unveiled its groundbreaking first Samsung tri-fold phone. This new device runs the Korean giant’s DeX desktop environment. Importantly, it does this without needing an external monitor. DeX first appeared with the 2017 Galaxy S8 range. It allowed users to connect their phones to external accessories. However, the software now runs natively on this new smartphone. Samsung calls this impressive device the Galaxy Z TriFold.
The Foldable Design and Display
The Samsung tri-fold phone features a three-screen design. When folded, it looks like a standard smartphone. It boasts a 6.5-inch, 2520 x 1080 “cover screen”. On the other hand, users can fold it out to create a tablet experience. The three panels combine into a 10.0-inch “main screen.” This large display measures 2160 x 1584 pixels. The folded dimensions are 159.2 x 75.0 x 12.9 mm. After opening, it measures 159.2 x 214.1 x 3.9 mm.
⚙️ Performance and Camera Specifications
The phone is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile processor. It is supported by a significant 16GB of memory. The device is slightly heavy, weighing 309 grams. It houses a robust 5,600 mAh three-cell battery.
The rear camera setup is highly advanced. It includes a powerful 200MP wide-angle lens. There is also a 12MP ultra-wide unit. Furthermore, a 10MP telephoto camera offers 30x digital zoom. Identical 10MP selfie-cams are available on both the Main and Cover screens.
Workspaces and Availability
Samsung is marketing this device as more than just a large phone. The inclusion of native DeX mode supports this claim. DeX allows users to access up to four separate workspaces. Each workspace can run five different apps simultaneously. For example, users can review presentations in one area. They can then quickly navigate to another for chatting or shopping.
The Samsung tri-fold phone will initially launch in South Korea. Sales start on December 12th for around $2,400. Samsung promises that other markets will follow. These markets include China, the USA, and the UAE. The company highlights the clever engineering behind the resilient folding mechanism. They are also offering a one-time 50% discount on display repair costs.
