Winter Weather Returns to Central Iowa

A significant winter storm is heading our way. Central Iowa snow and cold will dominate the weekend forecast. Travel issues will likely start early Saturday. This follows minor snowfall from Thursday.

Previous Snowfall Totals

Central Iowa already saw some snow earlier this week. Most areas recorded 1 to 2 inches of accumulation. The city of Perry reported the highest total. It officially saw 2.0 inches of snow. Albia received $1.5$ inches of snow. Des Moines measured $1.1$ inches officially. Minburn recorded exactly $1.0$ inch. Waukee was close behind with $0.8$ inches.

New Snow Arrives Saturday Morning

Friday will remain dry and cloudy. The next weather system will build in overnight. It is expected to arrive early Saturday morning. This will happen between 4 AM and 6 AM. Snow will continue throughout the morning hours. It is forecast to end by early Saturday afternoon.

Winter Weather Advisory Issued

A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect for a large area. This covers much of central Iowa. The advisory runs from midnight to 3 PM Saturday. It impacts the state’s northwestern to southeastern corners. Drivers should expect hazardous conditions. Plan your travel accordingly.

Forecast: More Snow and Frigid Temperatures

A higher amount of snow is now in the forecast. Expect 2 to 4 inches of snow across central Iowa. Some locations could see locally higher totals. This new snow will be very fluffy. This is due to the extreme bitter cold temperatures. Dangerous wind chills are expected throughout the weekend.

Preparing for the Weekend Cold

The combination of Central Iowa snow and cold creates a serious risk. Prepare for potential power outages. Check your vehicle’s winter readiness. Limit outdoor exposure this weekend. Dress in warm, layered clothing. Stay informed on the latest weather alerts
