26th Constitutional Amendment approved at the National Assembly after Senate

After approval from the Senate, the 26th constitutional amendment was approved in the session of the National Assembly. The government also managed to secure a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly.

Speaker National Assembly announced that 225 members voted in favor of the amendment.

Speaker National Assembly said that 12 votes were cast against the constitutional amendment.

Addressing the National Assembly after the approval of the 26th constitutional amendment, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that today is a historic day, the twenty-sixth amendment to the constitution has been passed.

The Prime Minister said that this wonderful example of national unity and consensus has been established once again. A new sun will rise today which will illuminate the entire country.

He said that governments were sent home through palace conspiracies, Prime Ministers were dismissed, today it has been decided that Parliament is supreme.

The Prime Minister further said that the agreement signed between Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif in 2006 has become operational today, and I want to pay tribute to Benazir Bhutto Shaheed along with Nawaz Sharif.

In the National Assembly, the number of members of the ruling coalition including JUIF was 219, 6 independent members in the National Assembly also voted in favor of the constitutional amendment. Chowdhury Ilyas, Usman Ali, Mubarak Zeb, Zahoor Qureshi, Aurangzeb Khachi are also among those who voted. 8 JUI members voted in favor of the amendment.

The twenty-sixth constitutional amendment was voted on by division after clause-by-clause approval
The government needed 224 votes to approve the 26th constitutional amendment in the National Assembly, but during the clause-by-clause approval of the amendment, 225 members voted in favor of the amendment.

Voting by division followed clause-by-clause approval of the twenty-sixth constitutional amendment. Nawaz Sharif voted first in the voting process through the division.

During the meeting, during the approval of the first two clauses, 12 members of the opposition voted against, later the opposition members boycotted and walked out of the House.

The Law Minister presented the 26th Amendment Bill for formal assent

After the approval of the 26th constitutional amendment by the House, the President will sign the constitutional amendment this morning.

According to reports, the 26th constitutional amendment will be signed at the ceremony.

Parliamentarians will also participate in the signing ceremony of the constitutional amendment.

The session of the National Assembly began under the chairmanship of Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, in which Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other members of the assembly including Nawaz Sharif are also present.

Prime Minister Nazir Tarar expressed his views and said that the Charter of Democracy was signed by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif.

Speaker Ayaz Sadiq ruled that the meeting will be adjourned at 11:55 PM, the meeting will resume on October 21 at 12:50 PM.

The National Assembly was adjourned to regular proceedings on October 20 and 21, Naveed Qamar moved a motion which was passed by the House.

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif while expressing his views in the National Assembly said that Justice Qazi Faiz Isa restored the honor of judiciary, he is going home with honor.

Khawaja Asif said that the 4 officers who came here did not contest the election on the ticket of PTI, they came here by contesting the election as an independent.

He said that the words that have been spoken should have some sense of shame and modesty, people’s consciences should not be changed by changing parties over time.

He said that the dispute that has been going on in the judiciary for a few years is only for the monopoly of a group, we had to free the judiciary but not so much that it takes away our freedom.

The Senate passed the interest elimination amendment unanimously

Fazlur Rehman said that the conflict here is about personalities, the ruling party is afraid of one judge, the opposition is afraid of another.

He said that the constitution is a stable document, laws are passed by simple majority, two-thirds majority is necessary for constitutional amendment.
