The US military base in Damascus marks a major shift in Middle East politics. Six credible sources told Reuters that the United States plans to establish a new base at a strategic airfield in the Syrian capital.
This step aims to strengthen a security pact between Syria and Israel, showing Syria’s realignment with Washington after years under Iranian influence.
Syria and Israel Move Toward a New Peace Agreement
The airbase near southern Syria will help enforce the upcoming non-aggression deal between Syria and Israel. Through this project, the US military base in Damascus will act as a command hub for peacekeeping and regional monitoring.
US President Donald Trump will host Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the White House on Monday. This meeting will mark the first visit by a Syrian leader to Washington.
Pentagon Prepares for Deployment
According to Syrian and Western defense officials, the Pentagon already completed reconnaissance missions at the site. These missions confirmed the base’s readiness.
A Syrian defense source said US teams plan to use the airfield for logistics, refueling, and humanitarian operations, while Syria will retain full control over the facility.
US military aircraft, including C-130s, landed at the base last month to test runway safety. Local security personnel confirmed multiple test flights during recent weeks.
Joint Syrian–American Operations
The US military base in Damascus resembles other American observation bases in Lebanon and Israel that monitor regional ceasefires.
Washington continues to support Kurdish-led troops in northeastern Syria to combat ISIS. Earlier this year, the Pentagon reduced its personnel in the region to around 1,000.
Syrian officials stated that any permanent US troop presence will operate under joint coordination. They also confirmed Syria’s plan to join the US-led global coalition against ISIS soon.
Strategic Diplomacy Behind the Plan
Admiral Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command (CENTCOM), visited Damascus in September. He met Syrian leaders and discussed security cooperation.
During the meeting, US envoy Thomas Barrack thanked Syria for helping eliminate ISIS networks. Both sides reviewed ways to expand peace talks between Syria and Israel.
Although Washington delayed the official announcement at the United Nations in September, officials expect to finalize the Syria-Israel agreement by the end of the year.
A New Era for US–Syria Relations
If both nations finalize the deal, it will redefine regional alliances. The US military base in Damascus will serve as a foundation for long-term cooperation between Washington and Damascus.
This project also reduces Iranian influence and strengthens US engagement in the Middle East. By leading this initiative, the United States aims to create a more stable and peaceful region.
