Polio Update: WPV1 and VDPV2 Cases in 2024

Wild Poliovirus Update
This week, Pakistan reported three new WPV1 cases. The affected districts are: Karachi Keamari and Kashmore in Sindh and Dera Ismail Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The total number of WPV1 cases in 2024 now stands at 84, with 59 from Pakistan and 25 from Afghanistan. In 2023, there were only 12 total cases.

In addition, fifteen new WPV1 environmental samples (ES) emerged, primarily from Punjab, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This suggests the need for stronger vaccination efforts. By November 2024, health officials had detected 622 WPV1 ES cases in Pakistan.
Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus Update
Although no new cVDPV cases were reported this week, eight new cVDPV2 positive environmental samples appeared, with six from the Occupied Palestinian Territory and two from Djibouti. The total for cVDPV2 positives in 2024 now reaches 34, signaling continued concerns for immunization programs.
